Peer Review
Why are we conducting this ?
There are two reasons
- Firstly: The MAIN purpose of this survey, is so that YOU can get a feeling for how your colleagues experience you as a co-worker. This is therefore aimed at self-improvement e.g. if you find that 80% of the people disagree strongly with the question “He/she is very keen to participate in meetings.” you might come to the realization that you are rather passive (will only participate if when asked a question or opinion) when it comes to meetings. What you do with this information is up to you. If, for this example question, it is your personality and you prefer to be less participating in meetings … so be it! On the other hand you might think “I always thought of myself as very participative” and you would like to "continue", then you can use this information to be MORE participative.
- Secondly: The results will be given a brief overview by directors responsible for HR in each company. ONLY if there are problem responses e.g. 80% or more of the respondents indicate something to the negative, will this then be discussed with you in person.
Who will be reading the results?
- You will receive your own results (i.e. what your peers/co-workers thought about you) to accomplish the first aim above How will it be sent to the person being reviewed
- Director responsible for HR in each company.
- If there are further discussions required the results will be discussed by yourself, the HR director and Martina Bezuidenhout (who is a consultant to EMSS on HR issues).
Who are the peers ?
- We are aiming to have about 7 people who will doing a peer review of each person. These are mostly the other people in your team but in many cases (e.g. when teams are too small) will involve other people with whom you have worked closely (or more close than other people) in the last year.
- If you are asked to do a peer-review on someone and you believe you have not worked enough with this person to be in a position to answer any questions, please contact HR and indicate so.
- NB: If there are questions which you feel you are not in a sufficient position to answer, please indicate by selecting NA (Not Applicable), and these will not be counted. In such cases please don’t go for Neutral as this should be used to indicate that this person is conducting in an “average way” (i.e. if there were 10 people doing what he/she is doing the average person would be similar to him.
Is this anonymous ?
Due to the nature of the questions we have made sure that the
results are recorded anonymously in a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet
will show
- Question 1: Disagree Strongly(2 responses), Disagree(1 response),
Neutral(4 responses), Agree (0), Agree Strongly(0)
- Question 2: etc.
Suggestion on how to answer
- It is suggested that you read all the questions below before you participate in any review. This will give you a better idea of the context in which these questions are asked and should also reduce confusion (i.e. knowing that there are similar questions following should highlight their differences).
- All responses will be of the nature [Disagree Strongly, Disagrees, Neutral=Average, Agrees, Strongly Agrees, NA*]
- Note the NA = (Not Able to Comment) option for each question. It is likely that if many questions are answered as NA we will know that either the wrong peers were asked to comment or that there is a problem with the question.
